Gordon Sumner was born in October, 1951 and although, he was born Gordon Sumner, his mother called him Sting as do his children and his wife. Sting began his musical career with The Police and went on to win 16 Grammy Awards as well as a Golden Globe, Emmy and an Oscar nomination. From 1978 to 1983, The Police had heaps of awards and five popular albums. Songs like Every Breath You Take and Roxanne are still widely known over 30 years after they were released.

Sting has spent more time as a solo artist than part of a band. In 1985, he began his solo career with his first album The Dream of the Blue Turtles, which included the hit If You Love Somebody Set Them Free. His first solo venture earned him nominations for various awards including Album of the Year and Best Engineered Recording.

He’s been a musical icon as well as an activist for causes that he deems worthy like his first concert in 1981 for Amnesty International. He performed for Band Aid in 1984 as well as Live Aid in 1985. After those concerts, he became a member of Amnesty International and joined musicians like Bruce Springsteen for a six week tour called Human Rights Now.

The famous singer has also done some acting with his first appearance in a movie called Quadrophenia and fourteen more stints in movies over his career. He’s appeared in many television shows and movies as himself including an episode of The Simpsons and the Bee Movie.

Recently, Sting set his sights on Broadway where he is making his debut with The Last Ship. It’s a musical about a community of people surrounding a shipyard in England. The music was written and performed by Sting and heavily promoted by him using his impressive star power, but Sting doesn’t perform in the show itself. Once it hits the stage, it will have to stand on its own without him. Before going to Broadway, the show has been in Chicago where Sting was bombarded by fans when he was seen watching from the shadows.

The musician has had a long, varied career but at the heart of all his endeavors is the love of creating music. During an interview, he was asked about his religion and stated that he is agnostic. Music gives him spiritual solace and gives his life meaning.

Sting will perform many of his popular songs on stage in the UK and parts of Europe in 2015. Fans will be able to hear him sing Every Breath You Take and Message in a Bottle among other classic pop songs.
